“I Need to Get in Shape Before I Try Kickboxing”—And Other Things You Can Stop Worrying About

You’ve thought about trying kickboxing. Maybe you’ve checked the class schedule, watched a video or pictured yourself taking a few swings at the bag.
Then the questions start.
What if I can’t keep up? What if I don’t know what I’m doing? Should I get in better shape first?
Trying a new workout can feel intimidating. At Kick & Fit, we want you to feel comfortable taking that first step. Let’s talk through a few things that might be holding you back.
“I need to get in shape first.”
You don’t need to reach a certain fitness level before you walk through our doors. There’s no entrance exam, required running pace or minimum number of pushups.
Your first class is a starting point. You can take breaks, find your pace and talk with your coach about adjusting exercises. Give yourself time to learn how the workout feels.
You’re allowed to be a beginner.
“I’ve never thrown a punch.”
That’s OK! You don’t need boxing experience, martial arts training or a perfect jab to get started.
Our coaches will introduce you to the movements and help you work on your technique. You might mix up a combination or need to watch it a few times. That’s part of learning.
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to practice. For your first class, focus on listening, asking questions and getting comfortable with something new.
“Everyone else will know what they’re doing.”
Some people in class may have been coming for months. Someone else might be trying it for the first time, just like you.
It’s easy to imagine everyone watching when you’re the new person. In reality, your classmates have their own combinations to remember and workouts to focus on.
Let your coach know it’s your first visit. You’ll have someone to turn to when you need help, and you won’t have to figure everything out on your own.
“I won’t be able to keep up.”
A class can share the same workout without everyone moving at the same speed.
You can pause to catch your breath, choose a lighter weight or ask your coach for another way to do a movement. Taking a break is useful information about what you need in that moment.
Your first class is a chance to explore the workout. Notice what you enjoy, what feels challenging and what you’d like help with. You can build from there.
“I need a friend to come with me.”
Bring a friend if you’d enjoy the company. But you don’t have to wait until your schedules line up.
Coming alone gives you a chance to meet your coach, get familiar with the space and settle into class. A quick “Hi, it’s my first time” is all you need to get the conversation started.
We’ll be glad you came.
“What if I try it and it isn’t for me?”
That’s exactly what a first class is for.
At Kick & Fit, your first class is free. You can experience our 45-minute kickboxing and strength training workout, meet the coaches and see how you feel about the atmosphere before deciding what comes next.
You don’t need to make a big commitment to try something new. Start with one class.
